Eco Coffins – Environmentally Friendly Coffins

Environment

Birds-eye view of Bamboo Coffins ready to be Shipped

Ecoffins Shipping Footprint

All of our coffins are designed so that the different sizes fit inside one another “Russian Doll” style, so that a 20 container holds 198 adult sizes. As a result, just one tenth of a gallon of fuel is used to ship one of our coffins from the Far East to the UK. An average 40 mpg car can travel just 4.8 miles with the same amount of fuel.

Fair Trade and Sustainability

Principle Ten of the World Fair Trade Organisation is Respect for the Environment.

This states: “Organisations which produce Fair Trade products maximise the use of raw materials from sustainably managed sources in their ranges, buying locally when possible. They use production technologies that seek to reduce energy consumption and where possible use renewable energy technologies that minimise greenhouse gas emissions. They seek to minimise the impact of their waste stream on the environment.”

“Buyers and importers of Fair Trade products give priority to buying products made from raw materials that originate from sustainably managed sources, and have the least overall impact on the environment.”

As a fully accredited member of the WFTO, Ecoffins is a leader in its region of China on all the above points. For example, our workshop in China cuts down its energy consumption and makes use of 100% of the bamboo brought into the factory by burning all the leaves and off cuts to run its kiln drying room. It also buys all its raw materials from Government Licensed Plantations.

Materials

The materials we use are all carefully chosen for their sustainability as well as low impact during harvesting.

Bamboo

Bamboo

Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet, growing up to a metre per day. Panda bears do not eat the species of bamboo which are used to make our products, so our production does not in any way affect this endangered species.

Banana

Banana

The banana is generally mistaken for a tree, but is actually the world's largest herb. Their main stem can reach a height of up to 8 metres, though it is not actually formed of wood, but the tightly coiled leaves of the plant. Our banana coffins are made using these dried leaves after the tree has produced its fruit and the stem is cut back each year.

Pandanus

Pandanus

Pandanus or wild pineapple is an environmentally friendly alternative to seagrass. Seagrass is an aquatic plant which grows in shallow coastal waters and provides shelter for many species of nursery fish. When this is harvested, the habitat is destroyed and the fish are endangered. Pandanus, on the other hand, is a prolific and rapidly growing weed which thrives anywhere on land, even in adverse conditions. When woven it is almost indistinguishable from seagrass.

European Willow

European Willow

European willow is a deciduous shrub found primarily on moist soil in cold and temperate regions of the Northern hemisphere. Almost all European willows take root very readily from cuttings or even where broken branches lie on the ground.

English Willow

English Willow

Willow has been grown in England on the Somerset Levels for many centuries and has the ability to regenerate repeatedly from the same”crown” of the plant for up to 40 years.

Cardboard

Cardboard

The cardboard used in all our coffins is made from a minimum of 75% post consumer waste.
